Project Hanford Trailer Camp, 1944

In 1943 the Federal Government began construction of a huge top secret facility in arid southeast Washington in the Hanford/Richland area, as part of the "Manhattan Project". This 586 square mile site became known as "Project Hanford" and would eventually house 9 nuclear reactors and 5 plutonium processing plants that would produce plutonium for the atomic bombs that the government would later drop on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, in the hopes of ending World War II. Some of the workers at the facility lived in government-provided bungalows in the Project Hanford complex, but thousands of others lived in trailers and mobile homes that were parked in an established area dubbed the "Hanford Trailer Camp" or "Camp Hanford Trailer City". This early Trailer Park included more than 3000 trailers and housed over 51,000 workers and their families. Most of these families brought their own trailers but some rented trailers from the government. These rare black and white DDRS government photos provide an amazing glimpse into the past, and what it must have been like to work at a top secret government facility and live in Camp Hanford's Trailer City in a 1940's trailer!
